Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President

In Flanders Fields

John McCrae - 1872-1918

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
 In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.

ACC Corner – Joe Rochel, ACC Chairperson

This month the ACC would like to remind everyone that whenever you do any work on the exterior of your house, that you MUST apply for a permit with the Carolina Shores POA office, for the specific type of work you want to perform. Some of the popular permits that homeowners request are: Tree removals, painting, fences, windows, doors, sheds, outbuildings, alterations or additions, political signs, for sale signs, Real estate signs, yard sale signs, HVAC units replaced, propane tanks installed, concrete driveway/patios/walkways, roof shingles replaced. If you have a question as to what you are planning on doing on the outside of your home then please call the CSPOA Office at 910-579-2044 or come by at 17 Lakeview Court. REMEMBER Permits do not cost anything! Please ask for one. These permits help keep our neighborhood as beautiful as we all like to see our homes look.

Just a side bar to help everyone keep our landscaping looking good and healthy. This is a great time to fertilize our lawns and trim some shrubs that have finished blooming for this spring. ALSO, please keep your lawn cut to keep the grass healthy and prevent weed growth. We recommend to keep lawns at no higher than 4 inches. NOTE if your lawn grows to 6 inches you will receive a notice it needs to be cut. If you cannot care for you lawn/shrubs, Please call the CSPOA office and we can assist you to locate a LAWN CARE COMPANY to help you.  I want to thank everyone for HELPING me in this position as ACC Chairman. Yours truly.

                                                                                                                          Joe Rochel, “At your service”

Recreation Facilities – Kelly Wilson

A picture containing icon

Description automatically generatedREC Area

The Rec area keeps getting its usage as clubs are meeting under the pavilion, pickleball and tennis is at full swing, plus the pool opening was on Mother’s Day weekend as scheduled. We hope everyone has been able to enjoy these facilities. Work on the pickleball/tennis courts will be starting within the next few weeks and should be completed in a timely manner. The new look will be a welcoming addition to the rec area. The turnouts for the community game nights have been enjoyed by many and don’t forget the Wine in the Park at the pavilion every third Friday of the month. We hope all members have a chance to enjoy the great amenities we have in our neighborhood.

CSPOA Pool

The CSPOA pool opened on Mother’s Day weekend as expected but cooler temperatures outside kept everyone away for an extended week until it returned to normal and was more enjoyable. We did have a few toe dippers, but nobody braved the cool water temps. Sunbathers have been able to enjoy working on their tans for the summer and the relaxation of just sitting and reading a good book has been a pool favorite every year. Lap swimming and water aerobics will be starting Monday June 6, 8:00 a.m. for lap swimming and 9:00 a.m. for water aerobics. Please remember to read the rules pertaining to the pool before visiting. Young children that are not potty trained are not allowed in the big pool and are required to have the approved swim diapers on before entering the kiddie pool. All other children that are non-swimmers are only permitted in the shallow end of the pool. We ask that you do not park on the grass unless there are no parking spots available in the lot. When signing in with the attendants, please write your last name and Carolina Shores address where required and please also write legibly so attendants can read your information. Members coming to the pool without working fobs will be asked for address information and for ID before being allowed into the pool area. If you cannot be verified, you will be refused admittance and will be asked to go to the office where they can adjust or replace the non-working fob. As always, guests must be accompanied with a member to be allowed admittance into the pool area and must be signed in with the member under Guest. Renters please be aware that you are not members but guests of the property owner member and should sign in as such. As we begin a new swimming season, we hope everyone has an enjoyable summer.

SWIM DIAPERS AND WATER WINGS

Residents of the CSPOA using the swimming pool have asked questions and raised concerns on what is allowed for young children to use while swimming at the pool. Though we have rules posted in both pool areas they are vague on what is preferred by the CSPOA. We hope this information clarifies any confusion regarding children s required swimwear.

Swim diapers or swimmies as they are called, used by residents are only allowed in the kiddie pool, not the big pool. These are also not recommended to be used in any large public pool. There are only a few companies that do make a swim diaper that has been accepted by pools in the area, are leak proof and reusable. There are many on the market some reusable, but these seem to be the only ones approved for public pools. We ask that all children not properly potty trained only use the kiddie pool for health reasons.

The name- ‘i play’ reusable absorbent swimsuit diaper. They are available in various sizes and can be purchased at Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon and iplaybaby.com.

We appreciate all families that have children in diapers to please use these approved swim diapers. As always, regular disposable and cloth diapers are not allowed in any pool.

APPROVED WATER WINGS/VEST

Other concerns that have been brought up concerning water wings worn by children in the pool. We require children to wear the one-piece wing/vest flotation non inflatable to be used in the pools. Inflatable water wings are not to be used as they are not a safe personal flotation device (PFD) and are not recommended by the CDC.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

stack of books isolated on white backgroundCorrection: May’s Book Discussion article was written by Pat McKay.

Our group met on Friday, May 20. This month’s reading selections were The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz and The Peacock Emporium by JoJo Moyes. The Plot is a literary thriller about a failed writer who steals the plot of a book from his deceased student. Our readers liked the intriguing concept of “a book within a book.” The Peacock Emporium is the story of a young British woman who struggles as she come to terms with her family and her past while opening a small eclectic shop in her hometown. According to one member, “there were numerous characters and plot lines, almost like three different books, and each of the subplots would have made a good story.”

Our next meeting will be held on Friday, June 17 at 10:00 AM. Each member will read a Pulitzer Prize or National Book Award Winner (2011-2022). As usual, we will meet at the POA Clubhouse and encourage any interested Carolina Shores residents to join us.

Care Team – Flo Pflaster

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgWe have many volunteers on the Care Team, ready and willing to help our neighbors with temporary assistance. I will do whatever I can to find someone to help - all you need do is call or email me!

For those of you who have volunteered to help others by being on the Care Team, here is how you make sure you are getting notifications when I post a request:

How to control all email notification settings (including groups)

1.      Log in to nextdoor.com and click your profile picture in the top right corner.

2.      Select Settings from the drop-down.

3.      Select Notifications from the left menu:

4.      Next to Email Notificationsselect Edit

5.      If you set Updates from your local area to None then you will not receive email notifications from your groups.

6.      If you set it to Only top posts or All you will get an email for every new group post. (choose this one)

Note: Adjusting these settings will affect all your email notifications, not just for groups.

If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. There are not many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they do get! It really does not take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed. So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I will do my best to find someone.

Thank you,
